The Public Deserves Some Answers - By Diane Lichtenstein

In light of Frank Matarrese’s statement late yesterday afternoon that he now opposes the Revitalize Alameda Point initiative, we have to wonder just what does the Council know that the public does not?

This initiative has been out for seven months. Did the Council just now read it? Or has new information come to light? Has the City created an alternative plan?

Matarrese cites the cost of the land transfer and other financial concerns that have emerged. What are they? The City has always known the price tag on the land was $108.5 million. That hasn’t changed. They’ve seen the finance projections, so there’s nothing new there.

What has prompted these out-of-the-blue wake up calls from the Mayor and Councilmember Matarrese, who just last week seemed to embrace the idea of public disclosure of ongoing negotiations between SunCal and the City?

These last minute proclamations are certainly insulting to SunCal after all the time and dollars they’ve spent – and are being asked to continue spending. Let’s remember the unanimous vote just last week by the Council to proceed with a SunCal financed $2 million EIR.

Whatever happened to transparency?!
