The continuing cost to Alamedans of doing nothing at Alameda Point is way too high.
There is a tremendous financial liability to taxpayers of maintaining and repairing the crumbling infrastructure and buildings. Of the millions of dollars the City has collected in rent over the years, a very small amount remains in reserves due to these costs. The fire last March at the former Naval medical facility cost the City $1.6 million in reserves to cleanup.
More important, the cost to the health of Alamedans is too high. This same fire released asbestos and other hazardous materials into the air jeopardizing the health of all Alamedans.
There are dozens of buildings like the former medical facility out at the Point. It’s time we support a plan to revitalize Alameda Point, clean up these toxins, and make the Point save and usable for all Alamedans.
