The Signatures are In!

On Wednesday, September 23, 2009, SunCal submitted signatures to the Alameda City Clerks’ office to qualify the Revitalize Alameda Point Initiative for the ballot.

“This is a tremendous milestone on the journey to finally redeveloping Alameda Point, “ said Doug Biggs, Executive Director of the Alameda Point Collaborative and a member of the Alamedans for Alameda Point Revitalization (AAPR) group. “Most importantly, this finally puts the matter in front of the people that count the most – the voters of Alameda.”

This moment has been a long time coming. The former Alameda Naval Air Station was decommissioned in 1993 and closed in 1997. Since 1993, there have been numerous community meetings and several plans to set a course for the future of the site. Community input led to a vision for the redevelopment that is now a part of the City’s General Plan. This community vision provided the guiding principles for the Revitalize Alameda Point plan.

“Those of us who have worked for over fifteen years to achieve an environmentally friendly, sustainable, mixed-use development rising from this blighted part of our Island can now see the possibility of that happening,” said fellow AAPR member and HOMES president, Helen Sause.

The City Clerk has 30 days from September 23rd to verify the signatures. It will then be up to the Council to schedule an election date.

Says Biggs: “This is an important decision for Alameda to make, and I hope my fellow voters will take the time to learn about the facts of the plan. I am confident they will see the merits, as I have.”
